Fig 1—How a computer interacts with a telephone depends on the connection architecture. With a host-to-switch link (a), the telephone and computer are logically paired without a direct connection. The PC can hook to the phone handset (b) for more direct control or connect to the network directly (c) to act as a telephone itself.
